Hyaluronic Acid Serums: What Do They Really Do?
Understand hydration claims, humectants and when a simple moisturizer is enough.
What The Ordinary lists
The Ordinary's French Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (with Ceramides) page lists several forms of sodium hyaluronate and hyaluronic acid, plus panthenol and glycerin, and describes a water-based hydrating serum. It is not interchangeable with the brand's older formula; check the packaging.
What La Roche-Posay lists
The French Hyalu B5 Sérum Suractivé product page describes four hyaluronic-acid forms and vitamin B5. Its published ingredient list also includes glycerin, alcohol denat., panthenol and fragrance. Formula details can differ by region and version, so do not generalize one listing to every Hyalu B5 product.
An evidence-aware shopping test
If your current moisturizer already feels comfortable and contains humectants, buying another hydrating serum might not add enough practical value to justify its price. Otherwise compare skin feel, ingredient preferences, your current routine and cost per 10 ml from the real delivered price.

How it works
Hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate are humectants that help bind water. A serum may improve how hydrated skin feels, but results depend on the whole product and environment.
Common misconceptions
A larger concentration is not necessarily more effective. Marketing phrases about molecular weight and deep penetration should be assessed critically rather than taken as guarantees.
Buying checklist
If your moisturizer already contains glycerin and hyaluronic acid, a separate serum may offer limited added value. Compare total formula, cost per ml and tolerability.
